With the Buzzards, won the first two championships in WPHL history in 1997 and 1998, including a six-game semifinal defeat of the Ice Bats in 1997, the first-ever playoff series for both teams. Selected to WPHL All-Star Game in 1998 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, winning the "Fastest Skater" skills competition prior to the game. Named WPHL MVP and Man of the Year in 1997-98. Signed a two-year deal with the NHL's St. Louis Blues in 1998 and played two and a half seasons for the Blues' AHL team Worcester. Spent most of the 1998-99 season in the ECHL, where voted to the All-Star Game. Finished 2001-02 season with the AHL's Providence Bruins, and tallied 38 goals and 24 assists over 171 AHL games. Last stint in the Central Hockey League came with the San Angelo Saints in 2002-03, appearing in six games as player-assistant coach. Former NHL star Brent Hughes returns for his fifth season as the Ice Bats Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, after guiding the team to a playoff berth each of his four previous seasons behind the bench, including a President's Cup Semifinal berth in 2000 and President's Cup Final berths in 2002 and 2003. As coach, Hughes has compiled a franchise-best 174-74-22 regular season record, including a 46-14-4 mark in 2002-03. In addition, more than a dozen Ice Bats players have received call-ups to the AAA-level under his stewardship.
The 40-year-old Hughes, a native of New Westminster, British Columbia, is a veteran of 12 seasons as a player in the National Hockey League, American and International Leagues. Hughes spent all or part of eight seasons in the NHL, appearing in 357 games with the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders.
